Odd Beholder — High Function Low Drive

Odd Beholder, the electro-wave/indie pop project by Swiss musician Daniela Weinmann, is expanding her current concept album "Honest Work" with six more tracks, and will release the EP "Funny Business" this autumn. “High Function Low Drive” will be released as the second single from the EP on September 25th, 2026.

Following the bitter and experimental double single “Thank You For Shopping With Us / Dreaming Water,” Odd Beholder delves deep into introspection with “High Function Low Drive.” The track was written during the same period as the music on “Honest Work.” Weinmann describes that time as so stressful that she had to take a sick leave for a while to avoid burning out:

"It ended up with me having daily panic attacks that seemed to come out of nowhere, because I no longer had any access to my inner self. The title ‘High Function, Low Drive’ describes the state I was in for months before this escalation: Everything felt like a must, nothing like a choice. I could work, but other than that, I couldn’t do much else. I had turned into my to-do list and lost my joy in life, and eventually, my sense of self as well."

“High Function Low Drive” describes a state in which one’s own emotions and feelings have been ignored for too long, and the focus is solely on simply getting through the day. The many existential issues that actually need to be addressed are pushing their way to the surface. But you have to work, clean, do laundry, and provide care, and you feel paralyzed, as if your life would fall apart if you were to confront these important questions. Weinmann continues:

“I am increasingly gripped by the unsettling certainty that our social value and well-being depend on obedience and on the economic surplus we generate through our (self-) exploitation. Anything that might stand in the way of bourgeois functioning must be marginalized and relegated to the most private sphere.”

Musically, the track is based on a beat by Berlin-based techno producer Douglas Greed, with whom Weinmann collaborates on her music. It reminds her of the mood on Radiohead’s "Kid A" — a pervasive sense of paranoia and anxiety. She explains:

“That also inspired me to write these lyrics. ‘Oh baby, give me all your sadness’ was an ad-lib that popped into my head and somehow reminded me of hype ad-libs or validation ad-libs in rap. It was as if I were cheering myself on: Yes, give me all your frustration, let it all out, the sadness, you've got this! Show me how you're really feeling!”
